Bendigo Kangan Institute, which includes trading brands Bendigo TAFE and Kangan Institute, is proud to have joined forces with over 30 organisations in the first ever Greater Bendigo Coalition Gender Equity Strategy, says Chief Executive Officer Sally Curtain.
The Coalition for Gender Equity is made up of local public, private and community organisations and groups who are committed to advancing gender equity and preventing violence against women and children.
“That is an excellent fit for us as we strive to advance gender equity here within Bendigo Kangan Institute,” Ms Curtain says.
"And this is important because gender inequity is still a pervasive issue across Australia and the rest of the world. We are all responsible in addressing this social issue so that everyone can live in safety and be free to participate in all aspects of community life.”
Ms Curtain says Bendigo Kangan Institute has already taken positive steps by establishing a working party to address better support for LGBTIQ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender/transsexual, intersex and queer/questioning).
The work extends right across the organisation – from student support to human resources and organisational development – as Bendigo Kangan Institute staff are committed to advancing gender equity.
“We already have a lot to be proud of,” Ms Curtain says.
“Last year, 11 female staff and students were invited to Government House to celebrate Women in Trades, and some of our students have proudly been part of our Women in Trades video promotion.” “Their success is a real credit to our passionate educators and staff who are committed to empowering individuals to succeed in their desired professions, no matter their gender.”
