Making the cut – Lauren Mcilrath AHIA finalist for Avant Garde Hairdresser of the Year

Leading local hairdresser and Bendigo TAFE teacher Lauren McIlrath is at the cutting edge of Australia’s hairdressing and training industries.

Lauren’s talent and creativity has led her to a rewarding and vibrant career as a prominent hairdresser and teacher in the region and most recently as a finalist for the 2024 Avant Garde Hairdresser of the Year in the Australian Hair Industry Awards (AHIA).

With more than 28 years in the industry, Lauren has seen trends come and go, but her commitment to her craft, and to training the next generation of hairdressers and barbers has been constant.

“I started my hairdressing and barbering career when I was around 16, and I went headfirst into my training and career,” explains Lauren.

“I have always been passionate and I’ve made sacrifices and compromises to continue doing what I love. I still love it as much today as I ever did.”

Lauren’s recognition in the Australian Hair Industry Awards in the Avant Garde category is a brilliant addition to a decorated career.

“I was so shocked! I didn’t think they were for real. I was up against some really serious competition with great talent and big budgets. Being recognised amongst my professional peers is very important for me.”

Lauren is on fire in 2024 with her AHIA award joining her accolade as Teacher of the Year at Bendigo TAFE where she teaches on average four days a week, while also running her own successful business, LM Hair Creative.

Lauren’s passion, her dedication to her students, and her commitment to learning outcomes saw her acknowledged by her peers and colleagues as the best of the best.

“Lauren’s industry expertise and passion have resulted in a remarkable contribution in the local industry and with us here at Bendigo TAFE,” explains Michelle Johnston, Acting CEO Bendigo TAFE.  “Her enthusiasm and dedication to her craft is exceptional and it has a positive impact on her students and their training outcomes.

Lauren loves being a part of the industry and provides some great advice for those beginning a career in hairdressing and barbering.

“Have a crack. If it’s something you want to get into and you’re passionate about it, then reach out, build your experience and grow your network. Give everything a try. You never know what doors might open when you put yourself out there.”

The Australian Hair Industry Awards were announced on July 1 at the Awards Gala in Sydney. Multiple AHIA champion Danny Prato took out the Avant Garde Hairdresser of the Year award for 2024.
