Plumbing apprentice scores $3K scholarship to support training

Bendigo TAFE apprentice Andrew Jan is one of 10 Australians selected to receive a Rheem Apprentice Plumber Grant valued at $3,000 to put towards apprentice training.

The scholarship, which includes $2,000 for education and a $1,000 tool voucher, aims to assist apprentices and young people to achieve their dreams and career objectives.

“I’m honestly blown away to have won this scholarship. This money will go a long way towards completing my Certificate IV in Plumbing,” he said.

Currently an apprentice plumber at Macedon Ranges Plumbing in Kyneton, Andrew worked in thoroughbred breeding for 11 years before making a career switch.

“I love the problem solving involved with being a plumber, and the variety of work and work locations,” said the 33-year-old who is pursuing certificate III and IV plumbing qualifications at Bendigo TAFE.

“I have found the professionalism and knowledge of the plumbing staff at Bendigo TAFE to be invaluable. I would like to thank the entire plumbing department for helping me through the last 2.5 years, and for having such a positive impact on me and my plumbing career.”

With another 1.5 years of study to go, Andrew anticipates his TAFE qualifications will lead him to a plumbing license and running his own business in the future.

Bendigo TAFE CEO Sally Curtain congratulated Andrew on his success and highlighted the vital role TAFE and industry in supporting apprentices to achieve their training goals.

“Congratulations to Andrew on achieving the Rheem Apprentice Plumber Grant. His success reflects his commitment to education and drive to build an illustrious career in a field he loves,” she said.

“Andrew’s success also demonstrates the important role played by our TAFE educators and industry, through initiatives like the Rheem Apprentice Plumber Grants, to support and inspire apprentices to achieve their fullest potential.”

Rheem Australia awarded a total of $30,000 to 10 recipients of the 2020 Rheem Apprentice Plumber Grants, with a record 202 apprentice plumbers applying for the grants from across the country this year.
