Six ways an apprenticeship can supercharge your career

This week is National Apprenticeship Week, 12 – 18 February 2024

Starting a career or making a change?  An apprenticeship could be the game-changer to your best future yet!

Bringing together hands-on training with expert industry guidance (not to mention an income from day one), apprenticeships offer the pathway you need to thrive in your chosen field.

Whether you're fresh from school or looking for a new job opportunity, a Bendigo TAFE apprenticeship could be the kick-start you've been searching for, here’s six reasons why:

Practical, hands-on training

Apprenticeships help you master practical skills, through immersive learning far beyond the classroom. This means you will have know-how to confidently tackle the challenges of your chosen field whether you’re on the path to be a plumber, a car mechanic or a hairdresser.

Get paid to skill up

Earn while you learn. With a Bendigo TAFE apprenticeship, you have the chance to earn a real income while you skill up. Get a head start in your career and some financial stability.

Personalised learning experiences

Apprenticeships offer personalised learning, so that you get the most out of your training in a way that suits your learning style.

Skill level = expert!

Under the guidance of industry professionals, you'll master industry-specific skills that are in high demand and directly relevant to your chosen career path. You'll perfect essential techniques through training that simulates that real-world work environment.

Broaden your network

You’ll make valuable industry connections through your apprenticeship. You’ll work alongside experienced tradies and others who are starting out, paving the way for future career prospects.

Industry-recognised credentials

When you complete your apprenticeship, you’ll receive a nationally-recognised Bendigo TAFE qualification that carries weight in the job market. No matter where you go in Australia, your certification confirms your expertise and your qualification can even open doors to working overseas.

Victorian Apprentice of the Year finalist and Bendigo TAFE Apprentice of the Year 2023, Tia Webb found her calling as a hairdresser after initially pursuing teacher training at university.

“I chose an apprenticeship because I got to learn on the job and develop my skills while getting paid,” said Tia.

“I started at Uni, but found it wasn’t for me and when I was offered an opportunity to become a hairdressing apprentice, I took it on. The apprenticeship was a more hands-on approach to starting my career rather than being book focused, which suited me, and the mentoring was a great help.

“My advice to anyone considering an apprenticeship would be to have a go at a few things and find something you are passionate about.”

Comments to be attributed to Sally Curtain, Chief Executive Officer Bendigo TAFE:

“Apprenticeships are a win-win for the apprentice and the employer. Apprentices are full of fresh energy and willing to learn their craft.

“This model can be a game-changer for businesses. They can cultivate a workforce to meet their specific needs while developing a pipeline of talent for the future.

“Bendigo TAFE trains hundreds of local apprentices every year, equipping individuals with the practical skills that industries desperately need right now to help fuel regional skills demands and help our communities thrive.”
