6. Find a Job
You can look for jobs on websites like Seek or Indeed. Many jobs ask for an Australian-style resume (CV). If you need help with job searching, some migrant job programs and TAFE courses can help.
7. Learn About Australian Culture
Australians are friendly and enjoy sports, BBQs, and outdoor activities. It’s good to understand some common words:
- G’day = Hello
- Arvo = Afternoon
- How ya going? = How are you?
Joining community groups and events will help you make friends.
8. Meet New People
Moving to a new country can feel lonely. Join local community centres, church groups, or sports clubs to meet people. You can also connect with other migrants from your home country.
9. Know Your Rights
Australia has strong laws to protect workers. Employers must:
- Pay a fair wage
- Give safe working conditions
- Not treat workers unfairly
If you feel treated unfairly, contact Fair Work Australia for help.
10. Take Care of Your Health
Moving to a new country can be stressful. Take care of your mental and physical health by:
- Eating healthy food
- Doing exercise
- Talking to friends or a support service if you feel sad or stressed
Settling in Australia takes time, but there is lots of support to help you. If you learn English, connect with others, and use local services, your new life in Australia will be much easier!
